“…Our finding of higher DHEA levels in girls than in boys and of their rapid rise after 10 years of age extends the observations of others (Sizonenko & Paunier 1975, De Peretti & Forest 1976, Mavoungou et al 1986, Maruyama et al 1987). “…Campbell et al (2004) reported a mean age of pubertal onset of 11.2 and 12.4 years for urban and rural Tonga boys from Zambia, based on an increase in testicular volume from 3 to 4 ml. Boys in Gabon show pubertal onset at 12 years, based on an initial rise in T and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (Mavoungou et al, 1986). Only Tswana boys, with an average age of pubertal onset of 14.95 years, come close to our estimate for the Turkana Fig.…”

“…Estradiol and prostaglandin concentrations were determined with specific antibodies according to the method of Lee and Migeon (1975). Testosterone concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay as previously reported (Mavoungou et al. 1986).…”

“…We found that the prolactin concentration was significantly higher and that the human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), testosterone, estradiol and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were significantly lower in plasma samples from microfilaremic women than in plasma samples from amicrofilaremic women. Since we previously demonstrated that sex steroids were lower and prolactin levels were higher in infected women (Mavoungou et al. 1986,1989), we hypothesize that reduced concentrations of estradiol, which is a potent anti‐inflammatory, may cause increased production of pro‐inflammatory cytokines, which in turn may increase levels of prolactin.…”
