Plasma hsa_circ_0027089 is a diagnostic biomarker for hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have recently been identified as a new member of endogenous noncoding RNAs. CircRNAs exhibit high stability and can thus can be used as valuable biomarkers for monitoring the occurrence and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The present study sought to explore the diagnostic significance of plasma circRNAs in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC. Plasma circRNAs from 10 patients with hepatitis B (HBV)-related HCC and 5 patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis were investiga… Show more

“…Another study screened the differentially expressed plasma circRNAs from 10 patients with HBV-related HCC and 5 patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis using microarray. They verified that the expression of hsa_circ_0027089 was significantly altered in HCC patients and can be used to distinguish HCC patients from cirrhotic patients and healthy participants ( Zhu et al, 2020 ). In addition, circRNA profiles were also investigated in HBV-related HCC and their paired adjacent non-tumorous (NT) tissues.…”

“…15 Due to the high stability of circRNA, it is better suited as a cancer biomarker than linear RNA. For instance, plasma circ-PTGES3, 16 circ-VAPA, 17 circ-YWHAZ/circ-BNC2, 18 and circ-LDLRAD3 19 were proposed as effective diagnostic biomarkers of liver cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer, respectively. Here, circ-CDYL was significantly upregulated in MM plasma, and the AUC value was 0.8996, implicating that plasma circ-CDYL may be a novel non-invasive diagnostic biomarker of MM.…”

“…Chen et al discovered a significantly lower expression level of circ_0051443 in plasma exosomes from patients than that from healthy controls, serving as a predictive and diagnostic biomarker, and it could suppress malignant biological behaviours by regulating apoptosis, proliferation, and cell cycle arrest [ 60 ]. In addition, the plasma level of hsa_circ_0027089, hsa_circ_0000976, hsa_circ_0007750, and hsa_circ_0139897 have been used to distinguish patients with HCC from healthy controls [ 61 , 62 ]. The plasma level of hsa_circ_0003998 in healthy controls was significantly lower than that in patients with HCC, with an AUC value of 0.892 alone and 0.947 in combination with alpha fetoprotein (AFP).…”
