Plasma levels of soluble E-selectin in patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation

Abstract: The plasma level of soluble E-selectin (sE) reflects the activation of endothelial cells induced by cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-and interleukin-1 in vitro. These cytokines are important in the development of coagulation abnormalities in patients with sepsis. We compared the plasma levels of sE in patients with infections suspected of having disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) (n = 33) and in patients with underlying disorders other than infections, including solid tumors (n = 28), obstetri… Show more

“…In agreement with literature data [29], high inclusion sE-selectin level is associated with hematologic failure at time of inclusion. Inversely, our study does not report any relation with patient outcome or presence of multiple organ failure.…”

“…At the site of inflammation, the activated vascular endothelial cells express e-selectin, which is a well-known receptor for leukocyte attachment [22,23]. An increase in the serum levels of sE-selectin might indicate the extent of vascular inflammation or vascular injury.…”

“…26 Plasma levels of soluble E-selectin are significantly higher in patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation or organ failure than in patients without disseminated intravascular coagulation or organ failure. 27 Thrombomodulin, as a receptor for thrombin, a kind of anticoagulant glycoprotein, is expressed on the surface of the endothelium. 28 Soluble thrombomodulin levels have been reported to reflect endothelial cell damage and to increase in patients with sepsis/multiple organ dysfunction syndrome after severe trauma.…”
