Platelet rich fibrin and xenograft in treatment of intrabony defect

Abstract: For complete periodontal regeneration, delivery of growth factors in the local environment holds a great deal in adjunct to bone grafts. Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) is considered as second generation platelet concentrate, consisting of viable platelets, releasing various growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, transforming growth factor, insulin-like growth factor, epidermal growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor. Hence, this case report aims to inves… Show more

“…One primary proposed reason for a slower release of growth factors over time is the ability of the fibrin matrix to hold proteins within its fibrin network as well as cells capable of further release of growth factors into their surrounding microenvironment 6,20‐23 . Leukocytes have been shown to be highly important immune cells capable of directing and recruiting various cell types during the wound healing process 24–26 .…”

“…34 Numerous literature evidences the regenerative potential of autologous platelet concentrates in surgical treatment of periodontitis in combination to scaling and root planing or other biomaterials. 35,36,37,38,39 Platelet-rich fibrin and Platelet-rich plasma have been used in such surgical regenerative approaches. 40 Intra-pocket application of PRF and PRP, seems to be difficult due to its inability for insertion and retention into small confined pocket spaces respectively.…”

“…3 Thus, adjunct use of growth factors 4 and pharmacologic agents, such as statins, 18,19 is increasing. To take advantage of the synergistic effect of various regenerative materials (platelet concentrates, bone grafts, and statins), [28][29][30] the current study evaluated the combined efficacy of PRF and 1.2% ATV in treatment of IBDs.…”

“…26,27 Considering the various regenerative materials available and the fact that combined properties of these materials could prove beneficial in regeneration of periodontal defects by a synergistic action, combinations of regenerative materials like platelet concentrates and bone grafts, with and without statins, have been successfully used in periodontal regeneration. [28][29][30] The combined effect of PRF and 1.2% ATV gel with OFD, to the best knowledge of the authors, has not previously been evaluated in treatment of IBDs in individuals with CP. Thus, considering the aforementioned findings and possible synergistic actions of platelet concentrates and statins, the current study is designed to evaluate combined efficacy of PRF and 1.2% ATV gel with OFD in treatment of IBDs in individuals with CP.…”
