Platelets function assessment in patients qualified for cardiac surgery – clinical problems and a newer diagnostic possibilities

Abstract: BackgroundAs the incidence of cardiovascular diseases increases, the use of antiplatelet therapy is widely recognized. This presents clinicians with the challenge of balancing the risk of thrombotic and bleeding complications. Platelet dysfunction is one of the causes of postoperative bleedings and their etiology is not fully understood. Platelets receptors point-of-care investigation is of a remarkable value in assessing patients risk of bleeding. Reliable assessment of platelet function can improve treatment… Show more

“…27 More recently, Kosiorowska et al stated cutoff values for total receptor blockade for ADP and ASPI tests as 31 AU and 30 AU, respectively. 28 Our results differ from the cutoff values provided by these investigators as our patients experienced bleeding requiring platelet transfusion with a more moderate inhibition of ADP activity as suggested by our cutoff value of 43 AU. A reason for this discrepancy could be that the patients in our study received concomitant aspirin along with thienopyridines and this could have a synergistic effect on platelet dysfunction.…”
