Platforms and Software Systems for an Autonomic Internet

Abstract: International audienceThe current Internet does not enable easy introduction and deployment of new network technologies and services. This paper aims to progress the Future Internet (FI) by introduction of a service composition and execution environment that re-use existing components of access and core networks. This paper presents essential service-centric platforms and software systems that have been developed with the aim to create a flexible environment for an Autonomic Internet

“…PlanetLab) as well as on small scale distributed infrastructures prove the targeted flexibility is achieved. The flexibility achieved by using the vCPI was demonstrated in [3] and the scalability obtained on mid-scale infrastructures was benchmarked in [4]. For the PlanetLab experiments we have prepared two types of Qemu images: one containing the vCPI software and another one for the VRs.…”

“…Context-aware virtual environments require a built-in flexibility which can be achieved through programmability [4]. The vCPI enables making the control functions of autonomic networks context-aware and guarantees both a degree of self-management and adaptation as well as supporting the efficient exploitation of the available network resources.…”

“…SDN CONTRIBUTIONS FOR SECURE CLOUDS Some broadly perceived advantages of using SDN for cloud computing networking come from the possibility to implement IDS, IPS, firewall [23], load balancers [27] and much more network functions as software modules in the SDN controller. In so doing, emerging threats can be addressed quickly by the programming of additional software modules, or else, developing software with autonomic techniques that provide automatic and adaptive routing with multi-path, congestion control, or any necessary function [28].…”

“…This section focuses on inter-disciplinary approaches to specify data link and crossdomain interoperability to, collectively, constitute a reference model that can guide the realisation of future communications environments in the Future Internet [4][11][12] [13]. The Future Internet architecture must provide societal services and, in doing so, support and sustain interactions between various communities of users in straight relation with communication infrastructure mechanisms.…”
