Pleistocene gastropods from Toca da Esperança, municipality of Central, State of Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: Fossil shells collected during excavations in Toca da Esperança, BA, were identified on morphological grounds as: Artemon intermedius intermedius (Albers, 1857); Gastrocopta (Privatula) corticaria (Say); Bulimulus (Rhinus) heterotrichus (Moricand, 1836) and Polygyratia polygyrata polygyrata (Born, 1780). Bone samples found associated with these shells were dated by the Uranium - Thorium method as being between 204,000 and 295,000 years old (Middle - Upper Pleistocene). Species of the mastofauna also found asso… Show more

“…Although Biomphalaria fossils are described from South America, dating back to the Palaeocene (55–65 mya; Parodiz 1969), extant species are only known from the Holocene (10 000 ya to present; Lima 1984, 1987; Lima & Alexandre 1985; Lima & de Oliveira 1992). In Africa, despite a rich fossil record of molluscs, Biomphalaria fossils are conspicuously absent and the oldest may be as recent as 255 000 ya ( B. pfeifferi ; Van Damme, pers.…”

“…One of the localities of occurrence indicated by Simone (2006), the municipality of Central, is mistaken. It was based on the work of Lima and Oliveira (1992), who reported P. polygyrata from an archaeological setting in that municipality. Their identification is erroneous and their specimen (Lima and Oliveira 1992: fig.…”

“…It was based on the work of Lima and Oliveira (1992), who reported P. polygyrata from an archaeological setting in that municipality. Their identification is erroneous and their specimen (Lima and Oliveira 1992: fig. 4) actually belongs to Systrophia (Entodina) Ancey, 1887, given the shell size and parietal fold in the aperture.…”

“…Este é um grande problema, pois o registro da bacia é consideravelmente antigo e rico o suficiente para ser de grande ajuda em trabalhos de paleobiogeografia e sistemática. (Scheffler & Salgado, 2007;Scheffler et al, 2010) e Bahia (Lima & Oliveira, 1992), ou ainda de locais distantes da distribuição atual da família como, por exemplo, o estado do Kansas, EUA (Miller, 1970).…”
