Poisoning from henna dye and para-phenylenediamine mixtures in children in Khartoum

Abstract: Poisoning by a mixture of henna dye and para-phenylenediamine dyes led to the hospitalization of 31 Sudanese children between 1984 and 1989. There was a characteristic clinical presentation. All children presented with an acute and severe angioneurotic oedema and 15 of the cases required emergency tracheostomy for respiratory obstruction. Acute renal failure occurred in five children who recovered after peritoneal dialysis. Mortality was high, all 13 deaths occurring within 24 hours of presentation. Hypotensiv… Show more

“…Many cases of toxicity and mortality either due to its accidental or deliberate ingestion were reported in Egypt, Sudan, Israel, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, India and Tunisia (Sir Hashim et al, 1992). PPD is well known as a skin irritant and sensitizer, and allergic contact dermatitis may occur after exposure to PPD in hair dye (Picardo et al, 1996;McFadden et al, 2011).…”

“…Morbidity and mortality are directly proportional to renal failure. It was as high as 41%in study by Hashim et al [6] The mortality rate was 9 per 100 and 8 out of 9 deaths occurred in patients with renal failure.…”

“…Except for a study in sudan by Sir Hashim M et al, ere children were mostly intoxicated hair dye poison is usually common in young adults. [6] The mean time to reach the hospital in our study was 3 hours 20 minutes. It was as high as 32hours in a study conducted by Anugrah cristpal et al [7] The predicted quantity of hair dye consumed for development of symptoms and to undertake tracheostomy was 60 ml.…”

“…6 High mortality within 24 hrs was noted in Hashim et al study 41% (13 out of 31). 13 In our study, the proportion of mortality in 165 patients is 21 (12.72 %), in tracheosomty patients 7 (6.08%) and in non tracheostomy patients 14 (28%). In study by Nirmala the propotion of mortality in 108 patients is 24 (22.2 %), in tracheosomty patients 7 (21.2%) and in non tracheostomy patients 17 (22.7%).…”
