Polarity Control at Interfaces: Quantifying Pseudo‐solvent Effects in Nano‐confined Systems

Abstract: Surface functionalization controls local environments and induces solvent-like effects at liquid-solid interfaces. We explored structure-property relationships between organic groups bound to pore surfaces of mesoporous silica nanoparticles and Stokes shifts of the adsorbed solvatochromic dye Prodan. Correlating shifts of the dye on the surfaces with its shifts in solvents resulted in a local polarity scale for functionalized pores. The scale was validated by studying the effects of pore polarity on quenching … Show more

“…7,11,12 For example, hydrocarbon chains with or without functional groups can be anchored in the pores of periodically-ordered mesoporous silicas (e.g., MCM-41, SBA-15). 13,14 However, other synthesis methods do not allow independent control of polarity and textural properties. 7,14,15 Co-condensation is a powerful strategy to separate these effects, since two or more different types of (organo)silane precursors can be incorporated in varying amounts, while controlling the morphology through the use of a templating agent.…”

“…Firstly, the addition of ethanol improves the dispersity of the hydrophobic solid catalyst in water, avoiding the loss of the catalytic activity. Additionally, in spite of being suspended in water‐containing solvents, the liquid‐solid interfaces of the hydrophobic solid acids has different dielectric properties to the bulk solvents, which was ascribed to creation of local hydrophobic environments on the surface . The effect is important to controll the chemical process at the interfaces.…”

“…by tuning pore dimensions and also provides a unique platform to study the effect of confinement on elementary processes. [118][119][120][121][122] The specific arrangement of particles to form hierarchical structures can also result in unique properties not observed in the bulk. 104 The inherent difficulty for the supramolecular self-assembly approach for structurally ordered ceria lies within the ability of ceria to crystallize or sinter at modest temperatures (<400 °C).…”
