Polarization Imaging and Scattering Model of Cancerous Liver Tissues

Abstract: We apply di®erent polarization imaging techniques for cancerous liver tissues, and compare the relative contrasts for di®erence polarization imaging (DPI), degree of polarization imaging (DOPI) and rotating linear polarization imaging (RLPI). Experimental results show that a number of polarization imaging parameters are capable of di®erentiating cancerous cells in isotropic liver tissues. To analyze the contrast mechanism of the cancer-sensitive polarization imaging parameters, we propose a scattering model co… Show more

“…More importantly, these parameters are related to di®erent structural or optical properties of the sample, such as density, shape and size of the scatterers, as well as the direction and alignment of the¯bers. [11][12][13] The RLPI parameters can be expressed as functions of Mueller matrix elements. We also de¯ned G ¼ A=B and proved it can quantitatively characterize the anisotropic properties of the sample.…”

“…9 The rich information of di®erent polarization imaging methods o®ers them good potential in clinical diagnosis of early lesions. [7][8][9][10][11][12] For example, Anderson 10 developed the di®erence polarization imaging method (DPI), in which the di®erence of two images with perpendicular polarization states is calculated. Jacques et al 7 proposed the degree of polarization imaging method (DOPI), in which the di®erence of polarization is normalized.…”

“…On the basis of polarization feature extraction and sample detection, Mueller matrix is widely used in the study of polarization characteristics of various tumor cells . The application of Mueller matrix polarization decomposition and Mueller matrix transformation in the detection of polarization in biological tissues has obtained many important research results, such as human skin basal cell carcinoma, liver cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer . However, the popularity of this method is limited by the expensive polarized light microscopy based on Mueller matrix .…”
