Policy Feedback

Abstract: Although the idea that existing policies can have major effects on politics and policy development is hardly new, the last three decades witnessed a major expansion of policy feedback scholarship, which focuses on the mechanisms through which existing policies shape politics and policy development. Starting with a discussion of the origins of the concept of policy feedback, this element explores early and more recent contributions of the policy feedback literature to clarify the meaning of this concept and its… Show more

“…Our findings, which add to the literature on the (ideational) politics of platform capitalism, hint at the potential of sectoral politics outside of the platform economy effecting reforms in the on‐demand food delivery sector. In so doing, our findings highlight the bidirectional relationship between policies and politics (see Béland et al, 2022). We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings for studies of AI politics and policy.…”

“…Many studies have explored people's perceptions of general issues, such as support for the welfare state or for specific policies and programs (ex‐post) (e.g., Jacobs et al, 2021; Lerman & McCabe, 2017; Mettler & Soss, 2004; Mizrahi et al, 2014; Reeskens & Van Oorschot, 2013; Shanks‐Booth & Mettler, 2019; Soroka & Wlezien, 2019; Van Oorschot, 2006). While policy affects behaviour, such as voting preferences and political participation (Béland et al, 2022), the idea of starting at the individual level and exploring behaviours, needs, and support for policy alternatives to provide ‘signalling knowledge’ to guide policymakers in policy formation is less common 1 . We added to this scholarship by examining the connection between people's time‐use behaviours, the way they want to use their time, and their support for policy alternatives.…”
