The emergence of online political advertising has come with little regulation, allowing political advertisers on social media to avoid accountability. We analyze how transparency and accountability deficits caused by dark money and disappearing groups relate to the sentiment of political ads on Facebook. We obtained 430,044 ads with FEC-registered advertisers from Facebook’s ad library that ran between August-November 2018. We compare ads run by candidates, parties, and outside groups, which we classify by (1) their donor transparency (dark money or disclosed) and (2) the group's permanence (only FEC-registered in 2018 or persistent across cycles). The most negative advertising came from dark money and disappearing outside groups, which were mostly corporations or 501(c) organizations. However, only dark money was associated with a significant decrease in ad sentiment. These results suggest that accountability for political speech matters for advertising tone, especially in the context of affective polarization on social media.

Social media are utilized by millions of citizens to discuss important political issues. Politicians use these platforms to connect with the public and broadcast policy positions. Therefore, data from social media has enabled many studies of political discussion. While most analyses are limited to data from individual platforms, people are embedded in a larger information ecosystem spanning multiple social networks. Here we describe and provide access to the Indiana University 2022 U.S. Midterms Multi-Platform Social Media Dataset (MEIU22), a collection of social media posts from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and 4chan. MEIU22 links to posts about the midterm elections based on a comprehensive list of keywords and tracks the social media accounts of 1,011 candidates from October 1 to December 25, 2022. We also publish the source code of our pipeline to enable similar multi-platform research projects.

La campaña electoral por la gubernatura del Estado de México realizada a mediados del 2023 se sitúa entre las más relevantes de la política mexicana contemporánea: se trata de la entidad con el mayor número de votantes registrados en el país, por primera vez en la historia contendieron dos mujeres y además el Partido Revolucionario Institucional se jugaba casi un siglo de gobernar dicho estado. Sin embargo, fue otro asunto el que resultó ser relevante para esta investigación: candidatos y candidatas en México están incrementando la propaganda electoral en las redes sociodigitales para promover su imagen y persuadir especialmente a las jóvenes audiencias. Por ello, se decidió analizar, mediante una metodología híbrida, un corpus selectivo de anuncios electorales publicados en Facebook por la candidata y actual gobernadora Delfina Gómez, con el propósito de distinguir sus principales características e identificar qué tipo de anuncios tuvieron mayor importancia en Facebook. Asimismo, esta investigación permitió evaluar los atributos y limitaciones de la Biblioteca de Anuncios de Meta.
