“…Previous studies of the basin have focused primarily on the sedimentology (Yin and Harrison, 2000;Wang et al, 2002;Zhou et al, 2002), tectonic evolution (Spurlin et al, 2005), tectonic-magmatic activity, and chronology (Yang and Wang, 1988;Deng et al, 2001;Spurlin et al, 2005;Zhu et al, 2006). Though only briefly mentioned regarding the Nangqian Basin, palynology has been extensively applied as a biostratigraphic tool for other petroleum-producing basins Zhang and Zhan, 1991;Gao et al, 2000) and to assess the changes in Cenozoic climate captured in the geological record of plateau basins of the TP, such as the Qaidam Basin (Xu et al, 1958;Zhu et al, 1985;Wang et al, 1999;Lu et al, 2010;Ji et al, 2011;Miao et al, 2011Miao et al, , 2012Miao et al, , 2013aCai et al, 2012;Herb et al, 2015;Wei et al, 2015), Jiuquan Basin (Miao et al, 2007;Zhang et al, 2015), Guide Basin (Pares et al, 2003), Lanzhou Basin (Flynn et al, 1999;Miao et al, 2013b), Xining-Minhe-Lanzhou Basin (Dupont-Nivet et al, 2008;Miao, 2010;Hoorn et al, 2012;Miao et al, 2013c;Bosboom et al, 2014), Hoh Xil Basin (Liu et al, 2003;Miao et al, 2016a), Tianshan Mountain (Chen et al, 2002;Sun et al, 2004), Tarim Basin (Sun et al, 1999;…”

“…This result is completely opposite to the picture of the cryosphere depicted in the literature; i.e., a build-up of Antarctic ice sheets reaching the present-day volume or larger, but with an ice-free Arctic (Zachos et al, 2001;Pekar and DeConto, 2006;Liebrand et al, 2011;Mawbey and Lear, 2013). Terrestrial pollen data from Denmark (Śliwińska et al, 2014), northeastern Tibet (Miao et al, 2013), and the North American Atlantic coastal plain (Kotthoff et al, 2013) support our interpretation; they show the sudden and brief expansion of conifer forests during the Mi-1 event, indicating cooling of 2-4 °C in the NH highmiddle latitude regions. This supporting evidence, with our own results, calls for a forcing mechanism that was able to drive the significant NH cooling during this episode.…”

“…This most apparent explanation for the change of organic matter source at ~23 Ma is the Mi-1 Glaciation as revealed by the compiled oxygen isotope records (Zachos et al, 2001). Palynological results from the Xining Basin showed the cold-tolerant conifers shrived while thermophilic plants declined during the Mi-1 Glaciation at ~23 Ma (Miao et al, 2013a). While during the interval of ~18 to 14 Ma, the (C 17 -C 21 )/(C 27 -C 31 ) ratio and C 27 /C 31 value were decreasing, while the δ 13 C org values exhibited an opposite variation, which suggested that C 4 grasses gradually flourished when the warm and wet climate shifted to warm and dry conditions during the MMCO (Zachos et al, 2001;Westerhold et al, 2020).…”
