Poly(4-vinylpyridine)-nitrating mixture complex (PVP-NM): solid nitrating mixture equivalent for safe and efficient aromatic nitration

Abstract: PVP-NM prepared from poly(4-vinylpyridine) and nitrating mixture (1 : 1 mixture of HNO3 and H2SO4) is a safe and effective nitrating agent for both activated and deactivated arenes under mild conditions. The polymer can be retrieved and reused without losing the efficacy.

“…[1][2][3] The amine on a polymeric support can act as a reservoir for acids like H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 and HF by acid-amine complexation that can be utilized as acid catalysts, nitrating agents and nucleophilic uorinating agents, respectively, in organic transformations. 4,5 However, the key issues in using the polymer supported amines are: (i) difficulty in withdrawing them from the solutions, and (ii) mechanical, thermal and chemical stability. These problems can be addressed by anchoring appropriate amines on superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles.…”

“…Polymeric nitrating agents have advantages such as (a) easy separation from the reaction mixture, (b) without excess use of nitrating reagents, (c) easy recyclability of nitrating polymer supports, (d) low toxicity, (e) and more stability and selectivity of nitrating polymer supports. [31][32][33][34] In the recent years, development of catalysts and/or reagents based on N-heterocycles with sulfonic acids functional groups is our interest. [35][36][37][38][39] In this regard, we have reported novel nitrating agents [Msim] At rst, poly(vinyl imidazole) (PVI) was synthesized according to the previously reported literature (Scheme 3).…”
