(Poly)phenols, Carotenoids, and Tocochromanols in Corn (Zea mays L.) Kernels As Affected by Phosphate Fertilization and Sowing Time

Abstract: Corn (Zea mays L.) growth and development is often limited by the availability of phosphate. We thus hypothesized that phosphate fertilization may increase the contents of (poly)phenols, carotenoids, and tocochromanols (vitamin E) in corn grains. Corn plants cultivated on a soil fertilized with 44 kg phosphorus/ha were compared to plants grown on soil with low plant-available phosphate (1.6 mg CAL-P/100 g of soil), each sown early (April) and late (May) in a randomized field experiment. “…The extracts (10 mg) were dissolved in ethanol and filtrated through a 0.45 µm syringe filter into a vial bottle. The analysis was performed according to the already reported methods with some modifications [47,75] and analyzed using an Agilent 1260 Infinity II series, coupled with an electrospray ion (ESI) quadrupole mass spectrometry 6130 (Agilent Tech., Santa Clara, CA, USA). Reverse-phase column chromatography was performed using the Restek Ultra C18 column (250 × 4.6 mm, 4.6 mm, 5 µm) (Restek, Bellefonte, PA, USA).…”
