“…Though their detailed function and mode of action are still not known, their essential role in cell proliferation and differentiation is well es tablished [1,2], In 1971, Russell [3] was the first who found elevated polyamine concen trations in the urine of cancer patients. Since then, several investigators have explored the clinical value of polyamine determination in the diagnosis of various types of human neo plasia, but the data presented so far yielded conflicting results, and the clinical relevance of polyamines as markers in the diagnosis or postoperative monitoring of tumors is still under debate [4][5][6], As aims of the present study, (1) we eval uated the sensitivity and specificity of poly amine determination in human serum and urine for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal malignancies; (2) postoperative polyamine analysis was performed to elucidate the role of polyamines in postoperative monitoring of patients with gastrointestinal cancer, and (3), since nothing is known concerning the role of the diamine cadaverine in this respect and due to the special importance of acetylated polyamine derivatives as major excre tory products of intracellular polyamines [7,8], certain emphasis was laid on the determi nation of these compounds. For polyamine determination a modified liquid chromato graphic procedure with improved sensitivity was used [9].…”
