Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) accumulation potential and PHA-accumulating microbial communities in various activated sludge processes of municipal wastewater treatment plants

Abstract: This is the first study to compare the PHA accumulation potential and PHA-accumulating microbial communities in activated sludge of various treatment processes. Our findings may be useful for enhancing the resource recovery potential of wastewater treatment systems.

“…With respect to phosphorus removal genes, ppk and ppx , were selected regarding their roles in poly-P synthesis and degradation, respectively [ 60 , 61 ]. Poly-hydroxy-alkanoate (PHA) metabolism has also been linked with EBPR, and involves a phaC encoded synthase [ 53 , 62 ]. In our analyses Comamonadaceae was also predicted to be the top contributor of ppk, ppx and phaC genes within the community ( Tables 4 and S1).…”

“…5). PHB content in seed sludge increased from 2.7% to 31% within 12 h, then reached 34% at 24 h. The PHB accumulation ability of the seed sludge was slightly higher than those of activated sludge collected from various wastewater treatment processes in municipal WWTPs reported previously 8) .…”

“…Although it has been known that PHB can be accumulated in activated sludge, the PHB accumulation abilities of activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are generally low, possibly due to the coexistence of PHB-accumulating microorganisms (PHBAMOs) and non-PHBAMOs 7), 8) . Therefore, selective enrichment of PHBAMOs with eminent PHB accumulation ability is crucial to enhancing the PHB accumulation ability of the sludge.…”

“…Representative laboratory-scale studies on enzyme production from the OFMSW are listed in Table 1. [19] Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are polyesters of hydroxyl fatty acids that are stored by a variety of bacteria as intracellular carbon and energy reserve materials [20]. PHAs can be synthesized by over 75 different bacterial genera as an intracellular carbon and energy reserve and/or as a sink for reducing redundant power consumption or electrons under unfavorable environmental and nutritional conditions [21].…”
