Polymastiidae (Porifera: Demospongiae) of the Nordic and Siberian Seas

Abstract: Polymastiidae (Porifera: Demospongiae) of the Nordic and Siberian Seas are revised and compared with the related species of the North Atlantic based on the morphological data from the type and comparative material and the molecular data from fresh samples. Twenty species from six polymastiid genera are recorded. Two species, Polymastia svenseni from Western Norway and Spinularia njordi from the Norwegian Sea, are new to science. One species, Polymastia andrica, is new to the Nordic Seas and two species, Polyma… Show more

“…They demonstrated well-supported close relationships to the species Spinularia njordi , Spinularia spinularia , Spinularia sarsii , and Spinularia cf. sarsii , collected from the North and Norwegian Seas ( Plotkin et al, 2017 , 2018 ), with genetic distances between the above species and Polymastiidae from Endeavour being less than 2% for COI and 0.8% for 28S. Genetic distances between Spinularia species and other polymastiids were greater than 3.3% for COI and 1.7% for 28S ( Supplementary Tables S8 , S9 ).…”

“…The transects were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. All specimens observed were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible from the ROV images, based on expert knowledge (HR, TB, and EP) and additional literature (Clark, 1970;Clark and Downey, 1992;Madsen and Hansen, 1994;CĂĄrdenas et al, 2013;Hestetun et al, 2017;Plotkin et al, 2018).…”

“…Together, these early descriptions listed 112 sponge species from west Greenland waters (BrĂžndsted 1933) and form the basis of the known sponge fauna of the Baffin Bay−Davis Strait region. Recent taxonomic reviews on the genus Geodia (CĂĄrdenas et al 2013b), and the families Tetillidae (CĂĄrdenas et al 2013a), Cladorhizidae (Hestetun et al 2017) and Polymastiidae (Plotkin et al 2017) included new records to the area.…”
