Polymorphisms of HLA genes in Western Javanese (Indonesia): close affinities to Southeast Asian populations

Abstract: Identification of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antigens that are known as the highest polymorphic genes has become a valuable tool for tissue transplantation, platelet transfusion, disease susceptibility or resistance, and forensic and anthropological studies. In the present study, the allele and haplotype frequencies of HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-DRB1 were studied in 237 unrelated healthy Western Javanese (Indonesia) by the high-resolution polymerase chain reaction-Luminex method. A total of 18 A, 40 B, and 20 DR… Show more

“…Study on Chinese and Thai populations showed that the SJS/TEN for carbamazepine were associated with HLA-B*1502, but not in Caucasian and Japanese populations as B*1502 allele is extremely rare in the Caucasian and Japanese population. [30][31][32][33] The finding of various HLA-B alleles play role as risk factors in this study may also be due to the fact that these alleles were found in the Mongoloid race which comprised of Indonesian 18 , in Malaysian, 28 and in north of Chinese. 34 The finding of HLA-B*35 type allele as a protective factor for NVP allergy in this study gives an opportunity to further study to the role of CD 8 T cells in type IV drug allergy, in contrasts to the studies in other countries showing the HLA-B*35 as a strong risk factor for nevirapine allergy (OR=18,34).…”

“…17 The high frequency of HLA-B among Indonesian populations has been reported in the previous study. 18 This study was performed to investigate the neveripine-induced allergies in association with HLA-B alleles among Indonesian HIV patients.…”

“…Keseluruhan kasus dilaporkan sembuh setelah konsumsi CBZ dihentikan. 10,11,31 Pembahasan tersebut menimbulkan suatu pertanyaan apakah reaksi simpang obat berat berupa SSJ-NET yang dipicu pemberian karbamazepin pada populasi Indonesia berhubungan dengan HLA tertentu. Lebih lanjut, hasil penelitian tersebut dapat dimanfaatkan untuk mencegah terjadinya SSJ-NET yang dipicu pemberian karbamazepin.…”

“…These alleles had been chosen because they have high frequency in Western Javanese (Indonesia) population (Yuliwulandari 2008). The alleles HLA-DRB1*15:02 covered 23%, HLA-DRB1*07:01 covered 37.8% and HLA-DRB1*12:02 covered13.1% of western Javanese population (Gustiananda 2011).…”
