Polymorphisms of myostatin gene (MSTN) in four goat breeds and their effects on Boer goat growth performance

Abstract: Polymorphisms of myostatin (MSTN) gene were investigated as a candidate marker for goat growth in 687 individuals by gene sequencing and polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism methods. Three potential genotypes (AA, AB and BB) of 5 bp indel (1,256 TTTTA/-) in 5'UTR were detected in four breeds. The polymorphism (CC, CD and DD) of substitution (1,388 T/A) in exon 1 was only segregating in Boer. Genotype AB resulted in significant increases in body weights at birth (BW0), 90 (BW90) an… Show more

“…Polymorphisms in the MSTN gene have been correlated to production traits, making it a candidate target gene to enhance livestock and fowl productivity (Lu et al, 2011;Han et al, 2012 andZhang et al, 2012). However, in many cases, the allele associated with favourable production traits is not always favourable for reproductive traits.…”

“…In the latest study, the polymorphisms of the MSTN gene were shown to have a significant difference in different goat breeds. It was reported that the TTTTA deletion phenomenon of the MSTN gene had emerged in different species and might be unique for goats, compared with sheep, cattle, water buffalo, domestic yak, pigs, and humans (Hadjipavlou et al, 2008;Grisolia et al, 2009;Zhang et al, 2012).…”

“…Myostatin (MSTN) is a member of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily, which plays an essential role in the regulation of muscle growth and meat quality (Zhang et al, 2012). The MSTN gene has 3 exons and 2 introns (Bellinge et al, 2005), and encodes a glycoprotein that is expressed widely in skeletal muscle.…”
