The aim of this study was to determine phylogenetic relationships of 6 native cattle breeds of Turkey using 7 Y chromosomespecific microsatellite DNA markers. DNA samples were isolated from Anatolian Black, Anatolian Grey, South Anatolian Red, Native Southern Anatolian Yellow, East Anatolian Red, and Zavot cattle using a standard phenol/chloroform method. PCR products were separated by capillary electrophoresis and marker genotypes were determined. A total of 41 different alleles were observed. The mean allele number was 5.86 and mean F IS value was 0.427 for all populations. The INRA189 locus was monomorphic for all populations except for South Anatolian Red. UMN0307 and INRA124 loci were monomorphic in the East Anatolian Red and Anatolian Black populations, respectively. The Anatolian Black population was assigned to its own population at a maximum level (78.26%). In this study, a taurine-specific allele was identified in the INRA124 locus. Zebu-and taurine-specific alleles were observed in BM861, INRA189, and UMN0103 loci. Allele 134 in INRA124 seems to be a specific allele of taurine or zebu. The alleles of the UMN0307 and UMN0504 loci need to be investigated for zebu-or taurine-specific alleles. The resulting neighbor-joining tree and structure analysis suggested that the breeds analyzed are consistent with their modern geographical locations.

Since their domestication in the Neolithic, cattle have belonged to our cultural heritage. The reconstruction of their history is an active field of research1 that contributes to our understanding of human history. Archeological data are now supplemented by analyses of modern and ancient samples of cattle with DNA markers of maternal, paternal, or autosomal inheritance. The most recent genetic data suggest that maternal lineages of taurine cattle originated in the Fertile Crescent with a possible contribution of South‐European wild cattle populations, while zebu cattle originate from the Indus Valley. Subsequently, cattle accompanied human migrations, which led to the dispersal of domestic cattle of taurine, indicine, or mixed origin over Asia, Africa, Europe, and the New World. This has resulted in their adaptation to different environments and considerable variation in appearance and performance. More recently, rational management of breeding led to international movements of sires, which again changed the global patterns of genetic diversity.

Summary Dehong humped cattle (DHH) is an indigenous zebu breed from southwestern China that possesses characteristics of heat tolerance and strong disease resistance and adapts well to the local tropical and subtropical climatic conditions. However, information on selection signatures of DHH is scarce. Herein, we compared the genomes of DHH and each of Diqing and Zhaotong cattle breeds using the population differentiation index (FST), cross‐population extended haplotype homozygosity (XP‐EHH) and cross‐population composite likelihood ratio (XP‐CLR) methods to explore the genomic signatures of heat tolerance and disease resistance in DHH. Several pathways and genes carried selection signatures, including thermal sweating (calcium signaling pathway), heat shock (HSF1) and oxidative stress response (PLCB1, PLCB4), coat color (RAB31), feed intake (ATP8A1, SHC3) and reproduction (TP63, MAP3K13, PTPN4, PPP3CC, ADAMTSL1, SS18L1, OSBPL2, TOX, RREB1, GRK2). These identified pathways and genes may contribute to heat tolerance in DHH. Simultaneously, we also identified LIPH, TP63 and CBFA2T3 genes under positive selection that were associated with immunity.
