Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy and Retinochoroidal Anastomosis in Japanese Patients Eligible for Photodynamic Therapy for Exudative Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Abstract: With ICGA, PCV or CNV with RCA were recognized in a substantial proportion of cases eligible for PDT based on the two clinical studies. Considering that the treatment efficacy of PDT for PCV or RCA has not been established, detection of PCV or RCA prior to PDT with ICGA is highly recommended.

“…In Japanese, the proportion of typical AMD ranges from 30 to 40% of the newly diagnosed exudative AMD cases, whereas the polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) occupies 30 to 50% [16][17][18]. This is in sharp contrast to Caucasian populations, where typical AMD occupies about 70% of the newly diagnosed AMD cases and the frequency of PCV is as low as 16% [19].…”

“…Each angiogram was reviewed by at least two of the authors, and the subtype and clinical features were recorded. A distinction between typical AMD and PCV was made based on the characteristic CNV or polypoidal lesions depicted by fundus examination or on the indocyanine green angiography as has been reported in previous studies [16,17,20]. Patients with other neovascularized maculopathies, such as pathologic myopia, angioid streaks, and retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP), were excluded.…”

“…This happens in most sub-types of age-related macular degeneration [2][3][4][5][6]. Some single reports describe this pathology after toxoplasmosis and histoplasmosis infection [7,8], trauma [9], and radiatory and photodynamic therapy [10,11].…”
