Polypropylene – zinc oxide nanorod hybrid material for applications in separation processes

Abstract: Hybrid filter material was obtained via modification of polypropylene (PP) nonwoven with nanosize zinc oxide particles of a high aspect ratio. Modification was conducted as a three-step process, a variant of hydrothermal method used for synthesis of nano-ZnO, adopted for coating three dimensional polymeric nonwoven filters. The process consisted of plasma treatment of nonwoven to increase its wettability, deposition of ZnO nanoparticles and low temperature hydrothermal growth of ZnO rods. The modified nonwoven… Show more

“…and three bands in the range 1130-1040 cm −1 due to C-O-C symmetric stretching. These prominent modes of the spectrum are the characteristic peaks of PLA and PP [14,26,27]. When the ZnO microparticle coating is present, it is possible to observe a general reduction in intensity of the bands related to the polymeric materials underneath the ZnO materials.…”

“…In order to enhance the properties of PP, different methodologies have been tested including reports by Zhao et al who investigated the photodegradation resistance of PP to UV-irradiation by incorporation of ZnO and found significant improvements [26]. PP has been modified with ZnO to produce hybrid filter material and found to have high filtration efficiency [27]. Bojarska et al investigated PP capillary membranes which were modified by ZnO nanowires.…”

“…However, the pores of traditional industrial nonwoven lters are distributed between 10 and 160 mm, and the minimum particle size that can be intercepted is 0.5-10 mm; the application of nonwoven lters in the eld of water ltration is limited. [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] Nowadays, dual-network structures inspired by spider webs attract the attention of many researchers, and numerous studies show that the continuous ultrane brous structure can yield substantial improvements in material utilization and resulting properties. 20 Liu et al 21 prepared a continuously welded 2D nanonetwork with a ber diameter of 20 nm, and topological Steiner tree structures were assembled into membranes with high-efficiency and transparent nanonetwork air lters.…”

“…Zinc also finds use in many different applications outside of the human body mainly due to its abundance and nontoxicity [17]. Zinc and zinc oxide have been used in the rubber industry, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, textile industry, electronics industry, for enhancing filtration, in making batteries, and in many other miscellaneous applications [18] [19] [20] [21]. Zinc oxide is an inorganic material with specific properties that is abundantly produced after silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide [22].…”
