“…Xylomannans with similar main chains were obtained from the mushrooms Armillaria mellea (Bouveng et al, 1967) and Polyporus tumulosus (Angyal et al, 1974). A. mellea presented a partly substituted main chain with branching points at O-4 by Xylp-(1 !…”

“…A. mellea presented a partly substituted main chain with branching points at O-4 by Xylp-(1 ! 4)-side chains (Bouveng et al, 1967), while P. tumulosus contained substitutions at O-4 by single units or different linkages of Xylp side chains (Angyal et al, 1974).…”

“…Based on data presented above, PIP60-1 has the repeat unit: Plant polysaccharides present in elm bark, 26 sassafras twigs, 27 and hydrolysates of the leaves of various dicotyledon trees 28 have previously been reported to contain 3-O-Me-D D-galactose, and 3-O-Me-D D-galactose residues have also been detected in polysaccharide components of the fungi Armillaria mellea and Lamperomyces japonicus. 29 However, PIP60-1 represents the first 3-O-Me-D Dgalactose-containing neutral polysaccharide to be identified in the mushroom, P. igniarius, and is structurally unique compared to polysaccharides previously isolated from mushrooms including other Phellinus spp. Antitumor and cell-mediated immuno-enhancing activities of P. igniarius extracts using a mouse model have been reported earlier, 30 and possible links between PIP60-1 and these immunodulatory and antitumor properties of P. igniarius are currently under investigation.…”

“…Significant differences were detected in the percentages of the monomers in the distinct fractions, galactose being well represented in Fraction I, and mannose and xylose in Fraction II. The presence of substantial amounts of mannose together with xylose in Fraction FII could be related to the xylomannan associated with the glucan, as has been described in the alkali-soluble mycelial fraction of Armillaria mellea [4], Coprinus cinereus [3] and Polyporus tumulosus [1].…”
