Population-Based study of Echocardiography: Time Trends in Utilization and Diagonistic Profile of an Evolving Technology, 1975–1987

Abstract: We evaluated trends in the use of echocardiography among residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, from January 1, 1975, through June 30, 1987. Annual examinations per 100,000 population among Olmsted County residents increased 6-fold from 264 in 1975 to 1,644 in 1986. Given the pattern of echo use in Olmsted County, these population-based data project a potential annual utilization of 4 million echo exams in the United States. Marked increases over time in labeling of patients with regurgitant valvular heart di… Show more

“…For example, a recent study of echocardiography in the Olmsted County population revealed that use of the procedure had increased from 552/100,000 population in 1979 to 1,435/100,000 population in 1985. 30 Nonetheless, the incidence rates presented here may still be underestimates of the true rates, even for the later time period. With more thorough and definitive evaluation of cardiac symptoms and early detection of mild and asymptomatic cases, we may expect further increases in the reported incidence and prevalence of DCM and HCM.…”

“…Approximately 1 in 50 residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, underwent echocardiography each year for differential diagnostic assessment of cardiovascularrelated conditions during the period of this study. 24 Verification of residence was based on information obtained from city and county directories or earlier medical records. Patients were included only if their residence was established in Olmsted County, Minnesota, at least 1 year before their first echocardiographic diagnosis of valve disease.…”

“…Our study found a more modest growth in echocardiography utilization rates (3.9% growth over 8 years) compared with studies examining utilization of echocardiography in the private sector. 7,8,19,20 In a population-based study examining trends in the utilization of echocardiography between 1975 and 1987 among residents of Olmsted County in Minnesota, Ballard et al 19 noted a 600% increase in utilization over a 12-year period. Another study examining the use of echocardiography among Medicare beneficiaries reported a 7.7% annual growth in the volume of echocardiography services between 1999 and 2004 after accounting for growth in the Medicare population.…”
