Porcine cysticercosis (Taenia solium and Taenia asiatica): mapping occurrence and areas potentially at risk in East and Southeast Asia

Abstract: BackgroundDue to the relative short life span and the limited spatial movement, porcine cysticercosis is an excellent indicator of current local active transmission. The aim of this study was to map at province-level, the occurrence of T. solium and T. asiatica in pigs and areas at risk of transmission to pigs in East and Southeast Asia, based on the density of extensive pig production systems and confirmed reports of porcine cysticercosis.MethodsThis study covered East and Southeast Asia, which consist of the… Show more

“…This article complements recent reviews on the distribution of T. saginata taeniosis/cysticercosis in central and western Asia and the Caucasus [50], and on the epidemiology of porcine cysticercosis in East and Southeast Asia [51]. Together with these companion articles, it demonstrates the widespread distribution of taeniosis and cysticercosis throughout the continent, with regional variations in the prevalence.…”

“…Due to the consumption of raw or undercooked pig liver, T. asiatica transmission has an important ethnogeographical association. Distribution is primarily in Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, southwestern China, Vietnam, Japan, and Nepal [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Whether T. asiatica can cause human cysticercosis is not yet clarified; if so, then T. asiatica infection could be one of the most neglected tropical diseases [ 5 ].…”

“…T . solium is prevalent in low- and middle-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa [ 3 ], Latin America [ 4 ] and South and southeast Asia [ 5 ]. In these areas, NCC is the major cause of preventable epilepsy in humans [ 6 8 ], and when access to health services is limited, mortality due to NCC is reported to be up to six times higher than in the general population [ 9 ].…”
