Pornography Viewing among Fraternity Men: Effects on Bystander Intervention, Rape Myth Acceptance and Behavioral Intent to Commit Sexual Assault

Abstract: College men's exposure to pornography is nearly universal, with growing viewing rates nationwide. Substantial research documents the harmful effects of mainstream, sadomasochistic, and rape pornography on men's attitudes and behavior related to sexual assault. The present study surveyed 62% of the fraternity population at a Midwestern public university on their pornography viewing habits, bystander efficacy, and bystander willingness to help in potential rape situations. Results showed that men who view pornog… Show more

“…These studies suggest that dominant behaviors often appear in pornography and that men are more likely to dominate women than women are to dominate men (Brosius, Weaver, & Staab, 1993;Cowan & Campbell, 1994;Gorman, Monk-Turner, & Fish, 2010). Accordingly, the possible role of pornography in men's attitudes toward the sexual domination of women and sexually dominant behavior over women has been the focus of many social psychological studies (Bouffard, 2010;Foubert, Brosi, & Bannon, 2011;Simons, Simons, Lei, & Sutton, 2012).…”

“…Further, the smaller but more focused literature on child pornography and other extreme forms of pornographic material, including violent pornography (Foubert, Brosi, & Bannon, 2011;Malamuth, Addison, & Koss, 2000), likewise suggest that such content may have unique associations with individual or relational behavior. However, essentially no current relational scholarship focused on pornography has considered how varying types of content may change, alter, or moderate associations between such viewing and relational processes and outcomes.…”
