Porosity and swelling properties of novel polyurethane–ascorbic acid scaffolds prepared by different procedures for potential use in bone tissue engineering

Abstract: In this work, a novel polyurethane (PU) system based on poly(ethylene-butylene) adipate diol, 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate, 1,4-butanediol, and ascorbic acid was used to prepare scaffolds with potential applications in bone tissue engineering. Two fabrication methods to obtain porous materials were chosen: phase separation (PS)/salt particle leaching (PL) and solvent casting (SC)/salt PL. The calculated porosity demonstrated that scaffolds with a higher porosity were obtained (76–86%) using the PS/PL method.… Show more

“…Post immersion, they were dried thoroughly with tissue paper and weighed again to obtain the wet weight (W w ). The following equation was used to calculate the swelling ( L ) of the scaffolds (Shahini et al, 2014; Kucinska-Lipka et al, 2017):…”

“…On the other hand, the increased isocyanate index in the formulation had caused an increment of pore size from 37–1333 µm (PU 0.8) to 57–1700 µm (PU 1.2), respectively ( Table 3 ). The increased isocyanate index in the polyurethane formulation from 0.8 to 1.2 had increased the pore sizes of the polyurethanes produced due to the combination of two types of conflict forces effect [ 44 ]. Higher amounts of IPDI used in the reaction could lead to the formation of allophanate crosslinking and hence increased the elasticity of the pore channels.…”

“…In accordance with previous works [16,30] a two-stage (prepolymer method) synthesis of polyester urethanes (S-TPU(PCL)) was carried out. The first stage of the synthesis was the reaction of the polyol (PCL diol), with an excess of diisocyanate (HDI) resulting in a prepolymer mixture containing an isocyanate terminated prepolymer (building soft segments) and an excess of unreacted diisocyanate.…”
