Porous HA/Alumina composites intended for bone-tissue engineering

Abstract: Ceramic biomaterials based on hydroxyapatite (HA) or alumina have been intensively studied due to their load-bearing applications in the bone-tissue replacement/reconstruction and dental applications. Here we present a study of the preparation and properties of HA/alumina (HA/Al) composites with a targeted porosity. The HA powder used for the composite's preparation was synthetized via a precipitation method under a variety of pH values. The resulting powders were verified with XRD, Raman and FTIR analyses. Th… Show more

“…TCP and tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) formed after the decomposition of oxyapatite but TTCP did not appear in the presented composite samples [28,29]. It is interpreted that the decomposition process of HA was partially completed so that HA and TCP phases were identified together in the structure instead of TTCP and TCP [6]. As it is well known from the literature, α-Al2O3, HA and TCP phases take place in the bioceramics class and are intensely used in biomedical applications in terms of prostheses and implants.…”

“…were used to synthesize different particle sized porous alumina ceramics [ 401 ]. Hydroxyapatite/alumina composite based foam was synthesized via a precipitation method under a variety of pH values that showed a good concentration of Ca 2+ and PO 4 3− contents [ 402 ]. The chemical modification of porous alumina surface with vitronectin and peptide (i.e., arginine-glycine-aspartic acid cysteine (RGDC)) enhanced bone cell adhesion and production of extracellular matrix [ 403 ].…”
