Portal Vein Thrombosis—a Rare Complication of SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Abstract: The SARS-CoV-2 is the causative organism for COVID-19 disease. It primarily affects the respiratory system. With time, some new extra-pulmonary manifestations of COVID-19 disease have been identified. Recent studies have shown that patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection may have a hypercoagulable state which explains the increased incidence of thrombotic events in these patients without any known risk factors. The most common thrombotic event described in these patients is pulmonary embolism. Intra-abdominal throm… Show more

“…PVT is a thromboembolic disease that mainly occurs in the setting of cirrhosis, myeloproliferative disorders, abdominal infection, inherited thrombophilia, hepatocellular or pancreatic cancers. However, PVT is considered a relatively rare thrombotic complication in COVID-19, with around 30 cases reported from our literature review [10] . The prevalence of PVT following COVID-19 was more remarkable in males and the most common clinical presentation was abdominal pain [11] .…”

“…A review on contemporary literature for patients with COVID‐19–induced portal vein thrombosis is summarised in Tables 2–4 3–14 . COVID‐19–induced portal vein thrombosis tended to have a male predominance with an age range from 26 to 82, with a median age of 50 years.…”

“…Both small and large vessel thrombosis has been reported in patients with COVID-19 [16,17]. Published reports have mentioned VSM, PV, aortic, hepatic artery, splanchnic vein, portomensenteric and ovarian vein thrombosis as a result of the hypercoagulable state due COVID-19 [2,16,[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. The digestive manifestations of a SARS-CoV-2 infection are varied and nonspecific.…”
