“…A more dramatic effect was noted when the extract was administered parenterally to rats (Gupta and Variyar, 1964). Shanmugasundaram et al, (1990) investigated that patients received 200 mg Gymnema powder twice daily in addition to their usual doses of insulin, mean glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA 1c) decreased significantly from baseline (12.8 to 9.5%) at 6 months in a controlled trial of patients with type 1 diabetes. Mozersky, (1999) reported that 22 patients were given G. sylvestre extract along with their oral hypoglycemic drugs.…”

“…Two animal studies on beryllium nitrate & streptozotocin --diabetic rats found that the G. sylvestre extracts to double the insulin-secreting beta cells number in pancreas &to return BS to almost normal. 12,13 Gymnema sylvestre increases the enzymes that are responsible for the uptake of glucose & utilization, 14 and inhibits glucose peripheral utilization by somatotropin & corticotrophin. 15 In India Gymnema sylvestre leaves, called "Gurmar", and are most popular for their sweet taste suppressing activity& are used for the diabetes mellitus treatment forover 2000 year, hence the name "Gurmar" meaning 'sugar destroying' to it.…”

“…The plant extracts are also used in folk, ayurvedic and homeopathic systems of medicine [3]. The extract of G. sylvestre plays a major role in blood glucose homeostasis through increased serum insulin level via β-cells regeneration of the endocrine pancreas [4,5]. In Japan, Gymnema Teas and Gymnema chewing gum are being made from G. sylvestre leaves and promoted as a natural method for controlling obesity, to increase the insulin secretion via pancreatic beta cells regeneration and to deterimine anti-sweet activity on tongue [6].…”
