Post-infectious myositis ossificans in medial, lateral pterygoid muscles: A case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Myositis ossificans (MO) is a disease where heterotropic bone forms within a muscle or other type of soft tissue. MO is classified into two groups, MO progressiva and post-traumatic MO. It rarely occurs in the masticatory muscles and thus, only 20 cases involving the masticatory muscles have been reported since 2001. The majority of the reported cases occurred due to trauma, repeated injury or surgical manipulation. However, in a small number of cases, no specific traumatic event was identified as the cause of… Show more

“…Myositis ossificans is another critical differential diagnosis and occurs with the formation of heterotopic bone in various tissues (9, 10) after sepsis has been reported (9). Interestingly, in our case, a lesion was observed in the liver, which was previously unreported.…”

“…However, the calcification process in damaged tissue has been reported for several conditions (1-4), including myocardial calcification (5-8) after sepsis. Sepsis, trauma, cancer or an imbalance in calcium metabolism are considered to be the triggering factors for these heterotopic calcification phenomena (8,9). Because our patient followed the pattern of sepsis deteriorating to MOF (e.g., liver dysfunction and rhabdomyolysis) and the calcifications were located in the liver and muscles, we propose that the calcium depositions formed in post-septic damaged tissue.…”
