“…The Americas, on the basis of existing efficacy data for the region and consequent WHO recommendation, began to introduce rotavirus vaccines soon after licensure in 2006 [11 ▪ ]. A 2018 meta-analysis of studies from Latin America estimated a vaccine effectiveness of 71% (95% confidence interval (CI) 61–79%) against rotavirus hospitalization in children less than 12 months of age in the region [11 ▪ ]. This same review calculated a median reduction of 43% [interquartile range (IQR) 37–50%] in acute gastroenteritis death rates in children less than 1 year in low-mortality countries, and 45% (IQR: 30–55%) in high-mortality countries.…”

“…WHO recommends the inclusion of rotavirus vaccine in the National Childhood Immunization Program in countries with high incidence of rotavirus infection [16]. Their implementation in many countries has demonstrated a reduction in the disease burden of rotavirus diarrhoea and related death in several geographic regions worldwide [1720] including sub-Saharan African countries [21]. Rotavirus vaccines are also recommended by the Spanish Paediatric Association since 2008 [22], but they are not funded by the National Health System.…”

“…Regarding approaches to health inequalities adopted by the interventions covered, the vast majority of reviews (forty-five in total) included interventions with a universal approach [ 48 , 50 , 55 , 58 63 , 66 68 , 71 74 , 77 81 , 85 88 , 90 102 , 104 108 , 110 ]. Twenty-six reviews included interventions adopting a targeted approach [ 48 , 49 , 54 , 56 , 57 , 62 65 , 67 , 68 , 70 , 72 , 75 , 76 , 78 , 82 85 , 89 , 92 , 97 , 99 , 103 , 109 ], and ten included a mix of both approaches [ 48 , 62 , 63 , 68 , 72 , 78 , 85 , 92 , 97 , 99 ].…”
