Post-marathon wearing of Masai Barefoot Technology shoes facilitates recovery from race-induced fatigue: an evaluation utilizing a visual analog scale

Abstract: PurposeTo investigate the potential benefit of post-race wearing of unstable shoes (Masai Barefoot Technology [MBT]) on recovery from marathon race–induced fatigue.Patients and methodsForty-five runners who participated in a full marathon race were divided into three groups: 1) MBT shoes, 2) trail running shoes, and 3) control (CON). Participants ran a full marathon with their own running shoes, and then put on the assigned shoes immediately after the race. They continued to wear the assigned shoes for the ens… Show more

“…Measurements of subjective fatigue using a VAS suggested that the recovery of subjective fatigue was enhanced in the MBT group as compared to the CON group (Figure ). This is similar to the results of our previous study . The new findings of this study involve physiological measurements and were as follows: (a) Isometric knee flexion torque recovered faster in the MBT than in the CON group (Figure ) and (b) hardness in some muscles in the lower leg and thigh would recover faster in the MBT group than in the CON group (Figure ).…”

“…In the present study, we demonstrated that following a marathon run, wearing unstable rocker shoes facilitated recovery from muscle hardness as well as muscle weakness in addition lessened subjective fatigue . Wearing such shoes would be valuable for both athletes and recreational runners, because daily wearing of MBT shoes requires no additional time or effort such as eating a special diet or drinking custom liquids that induces recovery .…”

“…Overall muscular fatigue was quantified by asking the subject to place a mark on a 12-cm visual analog scale with anchors at 0 cm (comfortable with no fatigue) on the left and 12 cm (too exhausted to do anything) on the right, as done previously. 17,19 The distance of the mark from the left was quantified as a percentage of the line length.…”
