Post-Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff formalism for relativistic stars

Abstract: Besides their astrophysical interest, compact stars also provide an arena for understanding the properties of theories of gravity that differ from Einstein's general relativity. Numerous studies have shown that different modified theories of gravity can modify the bulk properties (such as mass and radius) of neutron stars for given assumptions on the microphysics. What is not usually stressed though is the strong degeneracy in the predictions of these theories for the stellar mass and radius. Motivated by this… Show more

“…[31], and then promote the equations to the relativistic case in the way that the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation is recovered in the absence of Lorentz violation. The strategy is inspired by the post-TOV approach [51,52]. Our method inherits the model-independent advantage of the SME framework and saves us from the trouble of solving the full modified Einstein field equations.…”

“…If the separations from GR are not too large, then the post-TOV formalism generalizes the post-Newtonian formalism (necessary because of the not-small gravitational fields) to the static equilibrium equations [50,51,52,53]. The TOV system, separating slightly from General Relativity by the small terms with coefficients δ i (at first order) and π i , µ i (at second order) has been expressed as…”
