Posterior fossa dimension and volume estimates in pediatric patients with Chiari I malformations

Abstract: Mean PFV values were found to be smaller in pediatric CMI patients than control patients; this complements earlier studies in adults and supports the present theory concerning the pathophysiological mechanism of CMI. Subtle morphometric differences among asymptomatic and symptomatic patients aged 0-9 years stress the importance of monitoring asymptomatic patients for the onset of symptoms in their adult years. Symptom development in CMI is likely multifactorial and is much more extensive than the degree of cer… Show more

“…1,11,12,18,22,26,32,35,42 Children with CM-I have smaller posterior fossae than controls, 28,38,41,45 and in 1 study, patients with an associated syrinx had yet smaller posterior fossae than CM-I patients without a syrinx. 40 Syrinx has a strong association with scoliosis as well as motor and sensory symptoms.…”

“…Thin section images should be obtained to limit partial volume effects and allowing optimal visualization of small syrinx cavities. In human medicine, most of the investigations concerning SM have been carried out on T1WSE images 20, 21. Veterinary studies have used T2WSE images13, 22 and T1WSE images8, 14, 23 to evaluate SM.…”

“…fossa cranii posterior boyutu ile serebellar herniasyonun derecesi arasında ters bir ilişki olduğunu belirlemiştir. Literatürde CMT1'li hastalarda herniasyon gösteren tonsilla serebelli uzunluğunun foramen magnum'dan aşağıya doğru 3-29 mm arasında değiştiği bildirilmiştir (19,30,31 …”
