Posteruptive Tooth Age in Children with Down's Syndrome and Their Sibs

Abstract: The accumulated posteruptive tooth age was calculated for 212 children with Down's syndrome and 124 of their unaffected sibs. Posteruptive tooth age was shown to vary widely with different morphological permanent tooth types at the same chronological age. Girls in both groups had greater accumulated posteruptive tooth age than boys at each age. Sibs of both sexes generally exceeded the exposure experience of the children with Down's syndrome.

“…Another limitation was the number of teeth present in the mouth. The literature shows that people with Down syndrome have a delay in the eruption period of the teeth, both permanent and primary. Thus, when evaluating the indices of decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) and primary teeth (dmft), an adjustment to the number of teeth in the mouth should be done.…”

“…(1991)[ 8 ] found that among children with Down syndrome, 84% were caries-free. Orner's study (1975)[ 22 ] of the dental caries experience on Down syndrome contrasted with that of their unaffected siblings and showed that Down syndrome individuals had a caries experience less than one-third that of their siblings. This significant decrease in DMT and dmft in the present study could be attributed to increase in salivary electrolyte levels in the study group.…”
