Postnasal Drip due to Inferior Turbinate Perforation after Radiofrequency Turbinate Surgery: A Case Report

Abstract: Management of inferior turbinate hypertrophy includes surgical options in case of failure with medical treatment and the main goal of turbinate surgery is to relieve the patient's symptoms of chronic nasal congestion while preserving mucosal surfaces with reduction of the submucosal and bony tissue. In this regard, radiofrequency volumetric tissue reduction has been a thermal technique associated with satisfactory results and fewer side effects. Historical detail on onset, timing, duration, and severity of sym… Show more

“…The causes of ITH vary; the most common include septum deviation (compensatory hypertrophy), allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, and chronic hypertrophic rhinitis. The first-line therapy is antihistamines, systemic or topical decongestants and corticosteroids [ 15 ]. In addition, several surgical techniques are available to address ITH in patients refractory to medical therapy.…”

“…In most of the cases of ITH, medical line of treatment yields satisfactory results. However, in some instances when medical line of treatment does not provide satisfactory results surgical intervention is required ( Aslan, 2013 ). Turbinate volume reduction is the main aim of all the protocols used for the treatment of ITH ( Numminen et al, 2003 ).…”

“…Turbinate hypertrophy is observed in various conditions, including allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, and infectious rhinitis. Medical treatments such as antihistamines, topical decongestants, and topical corticosteroids are commonly used to treat those conditions, principally to reduce nasal obstruction and restore comfortable nasal breathing [1]. However, not all patients may respond to those medications.…”
