“…The volumetric fraction of DVC tissue occupied by synaptophysin, a component of synaptic vesicles, increases fivefold during the same developmental period (Lasiter & Kachele, 1989;Rao et al, 1997). The postnatal increase in synaptic terminals in the DVC (Lachamp et al, 2002) parallels increases in the dendritic elaborations of DVC neurons (Lasiter, Wong, & Kachele, 1988). Since the overall cytological organization of the DVC and the density and distribution of its inputs already are well established at birth (Rinaman & Levitt, 1993;Zhang & Ashwell, 2001b), the observed postnatal increases in DVC axon terminals and synaptic specializations are consistent with increasing innervation by the hypothalamus and other central nuclei.…”
