Postoperative endophthalmitis: Establishment and results of a national registry

Abstract: Postoperative endophthalmitis remains a serious complication of intraocular surgery, although the prognosis depends greatly on the microbe isolated. Common guidelines should be established regarding clinical and microbiological diagnosis and treatment. Further improvement of the registry would make it a suitable platform for evaluating prophylactic treatments.

“…2,6-9 Since 1999, the Swedish endophthalmitis rate has been steadily parked at 0.05%; that is, at the lower end of the incidence range reported in large-scale studies from various countries. 2,3,6,10,11 We believe that the universally adopted use of prophylactic intracameral cefuroxime in our country has contributed to the favorable situation. The objective of this study was to gather data on postoperative endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in Sweden from 2005 through 2010 with the aim of describing the epidemiology, morbidity, and risk factors. In addition, cases given preoperative and/or postoperative topical antibiotics as an add-on to the intracameral regimen were compared with cases that received intracameral antibiotics only.…”

“…[12][13][14][15] ). Sandvig et al 16 evaluated 111 cases of postoperative endophthalmitis, of which 80 (72%) were culture-positive. The detected etiologic agents were mostly (in 75 cases) gram-positive bacteria (coagulase-positive and -negative staphylococci, streptococci, enterococci, anaerobic propionibacteria); the rare gramnegative isolates included enterobacteria, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella sp.…”
