Postoperative results of simple underlay myringoplasty in better hearing ears

Abstract: The mean of the postoperative hearing gain was 10.3 dB and no cases of postoperative hearing loss were observed. Although postoperative re-perforation was found in 18 cases (24.0%), the re-perforation was closed in 16 of these cases in the outpatient department by the same procedure using frozen autologous tissue that had been harvested previously in surgery. Including these cases, the total success rate was 97.3%.

“…In contrast to patch application for traumatic TM perforation, the general consensus among otologic surgeons is that they are not suitable for repairing chronic TM perforations. “…The AF, from this point of view, showed the best results, but it needs a skin incision to be harvested, lengthening the operation time and increasing patient discomfort. 5,17 The 3 groups created on the basis of the graft material did not differ from each other in age, site of perforation, ossicular chain condition, presence or absence of otorrhea, previous surgery, or average threshold on pure tone audiometry. The only difference was a higher rate of cases treated with AF fascia under general anesthesia; therefore, the better results obtained could be partly justified by the easier surgical maneuvers allowed by narcosis.…”
