Postural Behaviour of Term Sga and Aga Newborn Infants

Abstract: SUMMARY The authors studied the body posture at rest of 15 healthy term infants with birthweights appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and 15 infants who were small for gestational age (SGA). In both groups, there was wide inter‐individual variability in pos:ural behaviour. Apart from a preference for a position with all limbs in abduction between I and 90°, independent of the degree of flexion or extension and internal/external rotation, no dominant preference posture could be seen for either group. The SGA … Show more

“…In our study, birth weight for gestational age was considered adequate in 75% of the sample, suggesting good maturational evolution among these PTNBs. [22][23][24] According to the literature, when the APGAR score is below seven following the 5 th minute, special attention must be paid to these newborn infants, even in the absence of altered laboratory exams. 25 The PTNBs of this study exhibited 1 and 5 minute APGAR scores greater than or equal to 7, confirming that these newborns evolved satisfactorily.…”

“…Isso ocorre pelo fato de muitos estudos de prognóstico terem sido baseados no peso de nascimento e não levarem em consideração a adequação deste peso à idade gestacional. É importante diferenciar situações transitórias e fisiológicas que ocorrem no prematuro durante o primeiro ano de vida de atraso efetivo no desenvolvimento [6][7][8] .…”
