– Fifty‐four patients referred to the Faculty of Odontology, University of Umeå, for investigation regarding “oral galvanism” were subjected to a general oral investigation. In addition the following parameters were studied: the highest calculated current between two metallic restorations in contact and the electrogustometrically determined threshold value for each person. No differences were found regarding these two parameters between the patients and a control group consisting of 15 persons. However, the general oral investigation had revealed that a relatively large number of patients had periodontal conditions which, together with mucous membrane affections and hypersensitivity reactions could explain some of the unpleasant sensations which bothered them. Furthermore, the results of a stomatognathic investigation which will be presented separately revealed that about three fourths of the patients needed treatment for their stomatognathic and/or temporomandibular joint conditions.

The aim of the study was to determine, in a group of patients with therapy-resistant burning mouth syndrome (BMS), the possible deficiency of vitamins B1, B2, and B6 and the effect of proper vitamin replacement therapy. Sixteen individuals, aged 47 to 81 years, participated in the study. All underwent a base-line examination comprising anamnestic information, subjective assessment of symptoms, dietary registration, salivary analysis, and serum analysis of thiamine (B1), riboflavine (B2), and pyridoxine (B6). Fifteen individuals had low thiamine and/or riboflavine levels in accordance with suggested levels in the literature and were given replacement therapy. No effect on BMS of vitamin replacement therapy or placebo therapy could be demonstrated.

– The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of pH changes in dental plaque and saliva on the magnitude of the galvanic current created when amalgam restorations make contact in the oral cavity. Ten persons with 46 contacts between amalgam fillings in all participated in the experiments. Potential, polarization, and pH measurements were performed before and after Coca‐Cola and orange juice rinsing and intake of sweets, which were used as test products. Distilled water was used as a control. The measurements were performed 2, 5, 10, 20, and 30 min after the rinsing or intake. There was no statistically significant difference in the current magnitude after any test product or between the time intervals after the different products. The results indicated that changes of the plaque and saliva pH for a short time after food and soft drink intake do not influence the magnitude of the galvanic current flowing between amalgam restorations in contact.
