Potential Benefit of Curcumin Adjuvant Therapy to the Standard H. Pylori Eradication Therapy in Patients With Peptic Ulcer Disease

Abstract: Objective: This study was designed to explore the benefit of curcumin as adjuvant therapy to the standard Helicobacter pylori eradication triple therapy in both duodenal and gastric ulcers patients. Methods: The present study enrolled 40 patients newly diagnosed endoscopically with peptic ulcer disease to be allocated into group 1 treated with standard H. pylori eradication triple therapy, and group 2 patients treated with curcumin (500 mg) capsules three times daily for 14 days as an adjuvant to standard tripl… Show more

“…Figure (1): Comparison of QOL mean scores of the SF-8 questionnaire in study groups patient's pre and post-treatment Discussion Demographic Data and Disease Characteristics of Patients with H. pylori Induced Peptic Ulcer DiseaseIn the present study and in other studies, both genders have a higher rate of infection with H. pylori microrganism with slight predominance towards male patients in this study and others[10,11] , or towards female gender in other studies[12][13][14] . Moreover, H. pylori infection mostly presents within (21-40) years age groups in this study, and a lower prevalence rate of H. pylori infection was noticed in the elderly among all study groups.…”

“…After 8 weeks of treatment, there was highly significant increase in the eight domains of the SF-8 score (PF, RP, BP, GH, VT, SF, RE, MH, PCS and MCS) in all 4 groups compared to pretreatment (P˂0.01), but no significant difference between the study groups after treatment was noticed (P˃0.05) (Figure 1) In the present study and in other studies, both genders have a higher rate of infection with H. pylori microrganism with slight predominance towards male patients in this study and others [10,11] , or towards female gender in other studies [12][13][14] . “…A meta-analysis of RCTs by Dehzad et al 2023 [42] showed the anti-inflammatory effect of curcumin/curcuminoids/turmeric. Subjects taking 60-2000 mg/day of curcumin or 150-1500 mg/day of curcuminoids or 900-3000 mg/day of turmeric showed reductions in CRP [weighted mean difference (WMD) = −0.58 mg/L; 95% confidence interval (CI) −0.74 to −0.41; I 2 = 98.9%; p < 0.001], TNF-α (WMD = −3.48 pg/mL; 95% CI −4.38 to −2.58; I 2 = 99.4%; p < 0.001) and IL-6 (WMD = −1.31 pg/mL; 95% CI −1.58 to −0.67; I 2 = 88.2%, p < 0.001), with no difference in interleukin 1β (IL-1β) (WMD = −0.46 pg/mL; 95% CI −1.18 to 0.27; I 2 = 75.8%; p < 0.001) in 46 publications [23,29,38, for CRP, 23 publications [24,43,47,48,50,[54][55][56]60,63,64,67,68,71,79,83,[86][87][88][89][90][91][92] for TNF-α, and 20 publications for IL-6 [23,24,[45][46][47][48]50,54,63,64,68,83,86,89,91,[93]…”
