“…Studies on the release of monocyte TNF-α after in vitro stimulation with coal dusts showed that TNF-α was increased in miners, especially in the early stages of pneumoconiosis. Miners who showed an abnormally high dust-stimulated release of TNF-α had an increased risk of progression to fibrosis (Kim et al, 1999;Schins & Borm, 1995). It was hypothesized that subjects carrying common functional polymorphisms IRON AND CALCIUM IN LUNG DISEASE 53 in these inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and antioxidant enzymes may be more susceptible to coal dust-induced CWP development (details recently reviewed) (Yucesoy & Luster, 2007).…”
