Potential Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources in Egypt

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive study to assess the impact of climate change on Egypt’s water resources, focusing on irrigation water for agricultural crops, considering that the agriculture sector is the largest consumer of water in Egypt. The study aims to estimate future climate conditions using general circulation models (GCMs), to assess the impact of climate change and temperature increase on water demands for irrigation using the CROPWAT 8 model, and to determine the suitable irrigation type to adap… Show more

“…As the basic material of human survival and development, water resources have the attributes of being the means of production and living resources on the one hand, and as a very important natural resource human life and economic construction on the other hand [1][2][3]. In the current situation of gradually increasing population and decreasing natural resources, and in the face of water shortage and frequent flood disasters, scholars have developed from the perspective of the rational utilization of water resources the goal of efficient and rational utilization of water resources [4][5][6][7].…”

“…Water resources are indispensable natural resources in production and human life as well as other social activities. Factors of climate change, ecological environment evolution and human activities, and climate change and its impact on water resources affect water resources and are important subjects worldwide [1,2]. In the past century, the characteristics of climate and environment have undergone significant changes, such as global warming, and climate change necessarily leads to changes in the hydrological cycle and the spatiotemporal redistribution of water resources [3,4].…”

“…The pressure on water resources is increasingly heavier and frequently contributes to a decline in available water resources [1]. This phenomenon is particularly visible in arid and semiarid zones, and in the Mediterranean region [2][3][4][5][6]. European countries situated in the temperate climate zone are experiencing problems with water intended for human consumption more frequently.…”
