Potential Interventions in Sepsis-Related Acute Kidney Injury

Abstract: Sepsis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Acute kidney injury often complicates sepsis, leading to greater complexity, cost of care, and worsening prognosis. In recent years, a consensus definition of acute kidney injury has been developed, facilitating research into the pathophysiology and epidemiology of this disorder. New and emerging biomarkers to recognize kidney injury before functional abnormalities are manifest may allow early recognition and facilitate prevention or treatment. Furthermo… Show more

“…The high incidence of sepsis and associated mortality risk in ICU patients are constant concerns [20,21] . Sepsis is also a well-known risk factor for AKI; 35%-50% of AKI cases in ICUs are attributable to sepsis [18,22,23] .…”

“…Such common acute kidney dysfunction in a critically ill patient and severe complication in the course of septic shock may worsen prognosis. 13 In this cohort, the association between fluid overload and kidney failure was observed in the univariate analysis whereas fluid overload was found to be an independent predictor of kidney failure in the multivariate analysis.…”
