Potential of Renewable Energy in Jamaica’s Power Sector: Feasibility Analysis of Biogas Production for Electricity Generation

Abstract: Jamaica is heavily dependent on fossil fuels to meet its energy demand and is currently seeking to reduce consumption. Accordingly, it is essential to investigate the expansion of renewable energy systems to achieve its 2030 renewable energy goal of 50%, with 70% diversification in energy types, as outlined in the National Energy Policy 2009–2030. This study explores biogas feasibility in Jamaica and discusses the potential for electricity generation from combinations of dairy cow and Swine feces with sugarcan… Show more

“…Supporting the development of community potential through increasing roles, productivity and efficiency as well as increasing four accesses, namely access to resources, access to technology, access to markets and access to financing sources, one of which is by forming BUMDes [20]; [21] This development is in the form of tourism village development. This is in accordance with (Endah, 2020: 138) The ability of a village that may be developed will forever remain a potential if it is not processed or utilized into a real reality that benefits the community [22]; [23]; [19] [24]. The development of a tourist village can be realized through increasing the capacity of BUMNag.…”

“…Moreover, Jamaica's heavy reliance on fossil fuels has had adverse economic consequences, with a substantial fraction of the gross domestic product (GDP) ascribed to imported petroleum costs (Richards & Yabar, 2022). Recent global energy price uctuations, exacerbated by geopolitical events, highlight the vulnerability of economies such as Jamaica, which greatly depend on imported fossil fuels (Ari et al, 2022).…”

“…where C P is the head counts in thousands, and the average fresh manure productions for cattle were 2.86 kg head −1 day −1 dry matter [41]. This study assumes 35% electrical conversion efficiency for calculating potential power capacity over 300 days of annual operation, as in the work of Richards and Yabar, 2022 [42] and Suhartini et al, 2019 [40]. Theoretical biogas potential TPB (CM) (m 3 /year) of cattle manure is calculated by Equation (2).…”
