Potential of Soil Stabilization Using Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) and Fly Ash via Geopolymerization Method: A Review

Abstract: Geopolymers, or also known as alkali-activated binders, have recently emerged as a viable alternative to conventional binders (cement) for soil stabilization. Geopolymers employ alkaline activation of industrial waste to create cementitious products inside treated soils, increasing the clayey soils’ mechanical and physical qualities. This paper aims to review the utilization of fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS)-based geopolymers for soil stabilization by enhancing strength. Previous rese… Show more

“…The mechanical strengths of the samples obtained, comparable to Portland cement, justify the use of these geopolymer pastes in the production of geopolymer concretes and in the production of precast concrete. Results obtained in the current study are in accordance with results previously obtained in the literature, while completing the knowledge about the production of alkaline-activated geopolymer materials [ 61 , 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 ].…”

“…The red mud dump can produce strong alkaline leachate, which can also harm people and animals near the dump . Therefore, many researchers have used red mud, fly ash, and coal gangue to prepare geopolymers and roadbed materials and achieved some good application results. , However, it is worth noting that the red mud contains many available chemical components such as aluminum, iron, and scandium, in which the content of aluminum and iron accounts for 40–60% of the total amount. , Efficient recovery of aluminum and iron from red mud is an important way for its comprehensive utilization of “reduction, recycling, and harmlessness”. At present, the extraction of aluminum and iron from red mud mainly involves magnetization roasting-magnetic separation for the recovery of iron and alkali roasting-alkali leaching for the recovery of aluminum.…”

“…A mix with a binder to sand ratio of 0.5 has been adopted for concrete patch repair [ 20 ]. Flyash and GGBS-based geopolymers have also been used for soil stabilization, particularly for the applications of road construction in Subgrade layers [ 21 ].…”
