Potential Pitfalls of Initiating a Newborn Hearing Screening Program

Abstract: Screening with TEOAE was sufficiently specific for universal screening. However, we were unable to achieve truly universal screening. This is probably the reason for our lower incidence of sensorineural HL. We were unable to continue our universal newborn screening program, due to lack of funding, difficulties with program implementation, and our low incidence of detected HL.

“…No estudo de Kanne et al 22 registraram 11,6% de perda auditiva em cinco crianças, índice bastante semelhante aos nossos achados, uma vez que observamos 7% no grupo II e 4,3% no grupo III, um total de 11,3% de orelhas estudadas. White et al 23 encontraram prevalência de 5,95 para 1000 para perda auditiva neurossensorial e 20 para 1000 para perda auditiva condutiva.…”

“…In addition, physician examinations and parental observations only occasionally succeed in identifying congenital hearing loss in infants under the age of one. To improve the early detection of infant hearing loss, in the past 15 years many countries and cities have instituted universal newborn hearing screening programs (UNHSPs) or have set up a series of screening measures (American Academy of Pediatrics 1999; American Academy of Pediatrics and Joint Committee on Infant Hearing 1995; Kanne et al 1999;Wessex Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening Trial Group 1998;Grandori 1999).…”

“…In other cases, estimates are derived for the cost per baby identified with hearing loss. There are several papers that provide information on each of the above factors and describe how they impact the cost of UNHS [Johnson et al, 1993;Maxon et al, 1995;Mehl and Tomson, 1998;Robinette and White, 1998;Kanne et al, 1999;Dort et al, 2000;Kemper and Downs, 2000;Stewart et al, 2000;Stone et al, 2000;Gorga et al, 2001; Kezirian et al, 2001;Vohr et al, 2001]. The reader is referred to these papers for more details and specific arguments related to cost.…”
